UV is also great for disease control.

A recent report from Wayne Wilcox at Cornell (also mentioned in previous comments on this site) indicates that UV is toxic to powdery mildew. While it may seem intuitive that more sunlight means hotter and dryer conditions, these researchers were able to decouple those effects and show that the UV rays were actually preventing powdery.
